Most barbershops treat a toddler’s first haircut like any other 15-minute slot: in, buzz, out. That works for adults. It does not work for a two-year-old who has never seen clippers. Little Legends is our answer — a first-haircut appointment designed around the child instead of the clock.
What Little Legends is
Little Legends is the Uppercuts first-haircut experience for children from 10 months to 4 years. It is a proper haircut, done by a barber who is patient with young children, with the whole appointment set up to make the first visit calm and, ideally, fun.
Straight from our booking menu, the experience includes:
- A gentle, age-appropriate haircut by a patient and friendly barber
- Extra time for comfort and confidence — we block off more than a normal cut so there’s no rush
- Fun, kid-friendly barber capes to make them feel like a superhero or princess
- Balloons to celebrate their big day
- Montessori toys to keep little hands busy
- Kid-friendly shows at the chair for distraction and comfort
- A keepsake lock of hair (optional)
- A photo to capture the memory (optional)
It costs $45, and the appointment is 30 minutes at Walnut Grove and 35 minutes at Willowbrook. Most of that time is spent getting comfortable; the cutting itself is short.
Why the extra time matters
A first haircut has a lot of firsts in it: a new room, a new person, a cape, a mirror, a buzzing sound. Given a few minutes to look around, touch the chair and watch the barber say hello, most children settle. Rushed, most don’t. The extra time is not padding — it is the thing that makes the rest of the appointment work.
Sit your child on your lap for the first cut if they are under two or unsure. The cape goes over both of you, they face out, and they can feel you the whole time. It is the calmest way to do a first haircut.
What the haircut looks like
Simple. For a first cut we recommend a tidy trim and shape, or a classic short cut with no skin fade. Fringe out of the eyes, a neat neckline, and curls kept a little longer so they still bounce. Fades and detailed work can wait for a visit or two, once your child is happy in the chair.
If you have a photo of the look you want, bring it. If you don’t, tell the barber how you’d like it to grow out — short and neat, or longer and soft — and they’ll take it from there.
How to prepare
A little preparation at home goes a long way. Talk about the visit in plain, positive words, let your child hear a buzzing sound (an electric toothbrush works), and bring one comfort item plus a snack for afterwards. After the first one
Once the first cut is done, the next ones get easier. Our kids haircuts (traditional, skin fade, taper fade and scissor cuts) cover ages 12 and under, and most children are ready to move up to a regular kids cut by their second or third visit. Same barber, same chair, no drama.
